SSD Manufacturers

Complete list of solid state drive manufacturers worldwide, including controller and NAND flash producers.

There are numerous SSD manufacturers worldwide but only a few build them from the ground up, using proprietary controllers. Fewer still manufacture their own NAND flash memory. The following is a list of all known SSD manufacturers at the time of writing.

Types of SSDs

  • NAND Flash – The vast majority of solid state drives use NAND Flash memory to store data. NAND (short for Not-AND, a logic gate) memory cells are non-volatile, meaning data remains intact when the device is powered off. These cells eventually wear out under program/erase cycles, so the market is partly segmented by endurance — enterprise SSDs use more expensive, higher-endurance variants.

SSDs do not have to store data in NAND, however. There are (or have been) other variations:

  • RAM-based SSDs – Unlike NAND Flash drives, RAM-based SSDs use volatile memory that requires continuous power to retain data. They are generally much faster and far more expensive, making them a niche case.
  • 3D XPoint (Optane) – A non-volatile storage technology jointly developed by Intel and Micron, sold under the Optane brand. It offered significantly lower latency than NAND but has since been discontinued.

Notable SSD Manufacturers

There are numerous SSD manufacturers and brands, but only a handful produce truly distinct products — most consumer-oriented brands rely on third-party controllers and NAND. Key players include:

Samsung Electronics: A long-time leader in the flash-based SSD industry, Samsung is one of a small number of companies that manufactures its own SSDs entirely from the ground up — including NAND flash, controller, and firmware.

Micron / Crucial: Micron is a major US NAND manufacturer that focuses largely on enterprise SSDs, while its consumer brand Crucial serves the consumer market. Both share the same underlying NAND technology.

SK Hynix / Solidigm: The South Korean NAND maker SK Hynix produces consumer SSDs under its own brand and acquired Intel's NAND SSD business in 2021, which it operates as Solidigm — focused primarily on data center products.

Kioxia (formerly Toshiba Memory): Spun off from Toshiba in 2019, Kioxia manufactures NAND in a joint venture with SanDisk and sells OEM and enterprise SSDs under its own brand.

SanDisk / Western Digital: SanDisk manufactures NAND through its Kioxia joint venture. It was part of Western Digital from 2016 to 2025, when the two split into separate companies again. Western Digital retains a stake in the business and the SSD portfolio is now fully operated by SanDisk.

Intel: Intel previously produced SSDs using both NAND flash (jointly with Micron) and 3D XPoint (Optane). The Optane product line was discontinued and Intel's NAND SSD business was sold to SK Hynix in 2021.

Notable manufacturers focused on more specific use cases include Delkin Devices, Innodisk, and Cervoz Technology, which produce industrial and embedded SSDs for rugged, high-durability applications.

SSD Controller Manufacturers

Other than the NAND chips themselves, the SSD controller is the most important component — a specialized processor that manages all data reading and writing. The major controller vendors include:

  • Phison: Offers a broad range of controllers for PCIe and SATA SSDs. Phison's platform model — same silicon, different firmware and NAND across brands — is used by Kingston, Corsair, MSI, Gigabyte, Patriot, and many others.
  • Silicon Motion (SMI): One of the largest SSD controller suppliers by volume, covering budget DRAM-less drives through mainstream PCIe 4.0 products.
  • Samsung: Produces proprietary SSD controllers exclusive to Samsung drives.
  • InnoGrit: Manufactures controllers for OEM clients in both consumer and enterprise spaces, including PCIe 5.0 designs.
  • Marvell: Offers controllers from SATA up to PCIe 5.0 for enterprise and consumer OEM clients.
