Samsung Dual Core Controller

Samsung SATA III (6 Gb/s) 1 drive in database

Samsung's dual-core SSD controller is the in-house ARM-based design used in the Samsung 830 Series (2011), one of Samsung's first consumer SATA III drives to achieve competitive performance. Samsung does not publicly name or document its SSD controllers. The 'dual-core' designation reflects the controller's two-core CPU architecture as identified in teardowns and technical analyses at the time of release.

The controller is paired with DDR DRAM for buffering and supports Samsung's own MLC NAND manufactured at Samsung's fabs. It was an early demonstration of Samsung's vertical integration strategy, controlling controller, NAND, and DRAM in a single product, which carried through to the MEX generation used in the 840 and 850 series.
