SSD Controller

Samsung Elpis

Samsung PCIe 4.0 x4, NVMe 1.3 8nm (Samsung) 1 drive in database

Samsung Elpis is the in-house controller used in the 980 Pro, from 2020. It was Samsung's first PCIe 4.0 x4 controller and among the first consumer NVMe controllers to support the interface, manufactured on Samsung's own 8nm process.

Elpis supports NVMe 1.3 and uses a 5-core ARM design. Paired with Samsung's 128-layer V-NAND TLC, the 980 Pro delivered sequential reads of up to 7,000 MB/s – near the theoretical bandwidth ceiling for PCIe 4.0 x4. An early firmware revision caused higher-than-expected SSD temperatures under sustained load, which Samsung later addressed via firmware update.
