Samsung Pascal is the in-house controller used in the 990 Pro, released in 2022. It succeeds Elpis as Samsung's second-generation PCIe 4.0 x4 controller, manufactured on Samsung's 8nm process and supporting NVMe 2.0.
Pascal delivers improved random I/O performance and better sustained write endurance compared to Elpis, while maintaining the same sequential bandwidth ceiling. The 990 Pro is paired with Samsung's 176-layer V-NAND TLC. Pascal also introduced improved thermal management, addressing the temperature issues seen with some Elpis-based drives.
