Samsung Piccolo is the in-house controller used in the 990 EVO Plus, offering a hybrid PCIe configuration that supports either PCIe 4.0 x4 or PCIe 5.0 x2 depending on the host system. This allows the drive to benefit from PCIe 5.0 lane availability in newer platforms while remaining compatible with PCIe 4.0 systems. Performance is not affected, as these two options offer identical bandwidth.
Piccolo is a 4-channel design, reflecting the mid-range positioning of the 990 EVO Plus relative to Samsung's 8-channel flagship controllers. The controller supports NVMe 2.0 and is paired with Samsung V-NAND TLC.
