SSD Controller

Samsung UBX

Samsung PCIe 3.0 x4, NVMe 1.1 28nm (Samsung) 2 drives in database

UBX is Samsung's proprietary NVMe controller used in the 950 Pro and the OEM SM951, released in 2015. It was among the first consumer NVMe controllers to reach the market, predating widespread PCIe NVMe availability by establishing the M.2 NVMe form factor as a practical option.

UBX supports PCIe 3.0 x4 and NVMe 1.1. The retail 950 Pro used a 4-channel configuration, while the OEM SM951 used an 8-channel variant for higher throughput. Paired with Samsung's 32-layer V-NAND MLC, the 950 Pro delivered sequential reads of up to 2,500 MB/s – roughly five times faster than SATA III – at a time when most SSDs were still SATA-based.
