Silicon Motion SM2262EN

Silicon Motion PCIe 3.0 x4, NVMe 1.3 28nm (TSMC) 2 drives in database

The Silicon Motion SM2262EN is a DRAM-less variant of the SM2262, sharing the same PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe 1.3 interface and 28nm TSMC process node but omitting dedicated DRAM cache. Instead it uses Host Memory Buffer (HMB) to borrow a portion of system RAM for address mapping, reducing bill-of-materials cost while avoiding the worst random-read performance penalties of fully DRAM-less designs.

The EN suffix stands for Entry-level NVMe. Despite the cost-cutting excercises, SM2262EN-based drives such as the ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro and HP EX950 delivered competitive performance in their price tier, making the controller popular among value-focused brands.
