Silicon Motion SM2508

Silicon Motion PCIe 5.0 x4, NVMe 2.0 6nm (TSMC) 1 drive in database

The Silicon Motion SM2508 is an 8-channel PCIe 5.0 x4 NVMe controller released in 2024, manufactured on TSMC's 6nm process. It is Silicon Motion's entry into the PCIe 5.0 consumer segment, competing with Phison's E26 and Samsung's Presto.

The SM2508 supports NVMe 2.0 and reaches sequential read speeds exceeding 14,000 MB/s. It is paired with 232-layer and later 3D NAND in drives such as the WD Black SN8100. Like other PCIe 5.0 controllers, the SM2508 runs hot at peak throughput and a heatsink is recommended. It is nevertheless more power-efficient than the Phison E26.
