WD Black G2

Western Digital PCIe 4.0 x4, NVMe 1.4 16nm (TSMC FinFET) 2 drives in database

The WD Black G2 (part number: 20-82-10034-A1) is Western Digital's in-house PCIe 4.0 controller used in the WD Black SN850 and SN850X. It is an ARM 32-bit Cortex-R design on TSMC's 16nm FinFET process, with 8 flash channels running at 1,200 MT/s and 4 chip-enables per channel. Unlike the concurrent Polaris-generation controllers, the Black G2 is DRAM-equipped, pairing with a Micron DDR4 cache chip. Multiple sources refer to the silicon as Triton MP16+, placing it in the Triton family (8-channel controllers) rather than the 4-channel Polaris line, despite the shared process node.

The SN850X uses a revised B2 stepping of the same controller, referred to by some sources as the Triton MP16+ B2 platform. WD does not publicly document the distinction. Both drives are marketed under the WD_BLACK G2 name.
