Overview

Micron's 5100 Pro is a 2.5-inch enterprise SATA SSD released in 2017, built on Micron's first-generation 32-layer 3D TLC NAND and a Marvell 88SS1074 controller with four NAND channels. It is the mid-tier endurance option in the 5100 family, positioned between the ECO (0.3 DWPD) and MAX (3 DWPD) variants, with a workload rating of approximately 1 DWPD over a five-year service life.

All capacities deliver sequential read speeds at 540 MB/s. Sequential write varies with capacity: the 240GB model writes at 250 MB/s due to limited NAND parallelism, while the 480GB reaches 410 MB/s and 960GB and above saturate the interface at 520 MB/s. Random write IOPS also varies. The 240GB writes at 26,000 IOPS versus 37,000–43,000 IOPS for larger capacities, again reflecting the same parallelism constraints.

You could get this drive in both 2.5-inch and M.2 2280 form factors but at different capacities. The M.2 variant covers 240GB through 1920GB but the 3840GB capacity is 2.5-inch only. Power consumption scales with capacity: the 240GB and 480GB models draw up to 4.5W under load, the 960GB up to 5W, and the 3840GB up to 6W. Idle power is 1.5W across all capacities.

Enterprise features include AES-256 hardware encryption with TCG Enterprise SED compliance, end-to-end data protection, and power-loss protection via capacitor monitoring. The 5100 Pro was succeeded by the 5200 Pro in 2018, which retained the same controller but moved to 64-layer NAND and added the 5200 Pro variant at higher capacities only (960GB–3840GB).

  • “The 5100 PRO's performance is competitive with other high-end enterprise SATA SSDs, and the 5100 MAX offers even higher endurance for write-intensive workloads.”
