SSD Controller

Marvell 88SS9175

Marvell SATA III (6 Gb/s) 1 drive in database

The Marvell 88SS9175 is a cost-reduced, 4-channel derivative of the 88SS9174, sharing the same SATA III interface and general architecture but halving the NAND channel count to lower BOM cost and power consumption. The 8-channel 88SS9174 appeared in drives such as the Intel 510 and Crucial M4, while the 88SS9175 targets the mainstream consumer segment where peak throughput is less critical than price.

The controller is DRAM-equipped and was paired with DDR2 cache in the drives it shipped in. It also supports a two-tier caching scheme combining DRAM with a portion of the MLC NAND array operating in SLC mode, marketed as nCache by SanDisk in the Ultra Plus. The 88SS9175 was succeeded in Marvell's lineup by the 88SS9187.
