Marvell 88SS9187

Marvell SATA III (6 Gb/s) 9 drives in database

The Marvell 88SS9187 is a SATA 6 Gb/s SSD controller released around 2012, targeting Ultrabook, mSATA, mobile, and cost-effective enterprise caching applications. It integrates a dual-core Marvell 88FR102 V5 CPU with shared DTCM and ITCM SRAM, and supports up to eight NAND flash channels at up to 200 MB/s per channel via ONFI 2.0/Toggle (up to Mode 5).

The 88SS9187 is a DRAM-equipped design supporting DDR2-800 and DDR3-800 with up to 1 GB of external memory, for performance-optimized address mapping. Marvell specified ~500 MB/s sequential write performance even under dirty drive conditions, and claimed maximum sequential read performance for a SATA 6 Gb/s device. The controller includes a high-performance ECC engine with adaptive read and write schemes, on-chip RAID functionality for NAND block management, hardware AES encryption, and TCG (Trusted Computing Group) standards support including OTP secure configuration and media re-encryption.

It was used in several well-regarded consumer drives of its era including the Crucial RealSSD C400 (Crucial m4) and Plextor M-series drives.
